Business funding, explained in plain English.
No jargon, no fine-print games. Here is exactly how a merchant cash advance works, how it stacks up against a term loan or equipment cash-out, and how to tell a fair deal from a bad one.
If you have ever been told you were "approved for a cash advance" and had no idea what that actually meant, this page is for you.
What is a merchant cash advance (MCA)?
A merchant cash advance is not really a loan. It is a purchase. A funder gives you a lump sum of cash today, and in exchange buys a fixed dollar amount of your future sales at a discount. You pay it back a little at a time, usually as an automatic slice of your daily or weekly deposits, until that fixed amount is paid in full.
Because it is tied to your sales instead of your credit score, an MCA is fast and flexible. That is why owners reach for it when a slow-paying customer, a broken-down truck, or a sudden opportunity will not wait for a bank.
You get cash up front. You pay back a set total over time as a small piece of your sales. No collateral, all credit profiles considered, funded in 24 to 48 hours once approved.
How repayment actually works
You get a lump sum
The full advance lands in your business account, typically within 24 to 48 hours of approval.
You repay a fixed total
A small, automatic amount comes out daily or weekly. The total you owe is set on day one and never changes.
You are done
Once the agreed amount is paid back, it is finished. Many owners renew for more capital as they grow.
MCA vs. term loan vs. equipment cash-out
They are three different tools. The right one depends on how fast you need the money, how long you want to pay it back, and what you already own.
| Merchant cash advance | Term loan | Equipment cash-out | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Speed and flexibility | Bigger, planned moves | Turning owned gear into cash |
| Time to funding | 24 to 48 hours | A few days to a week | Fast close |
| Repayment | Slice of daily/weekly sales | Fixed monthly, up to 36 months | Fixed schedule |
| Credit | All profiles | Stronger profiles | Flexible, asset-backed |
| Collateral | None | Sometimes | The equipment you own |
How to read the numbers (and spot a bad deal)
Two advances can look identical and cost very different amounts. Before you sign anything, get clear answers to these:
- What is the total payback, in dollars, not just the "factor rate"? That is the real number.
- What is the daily or weekly payment, and can your cash flow actually handle it?
- Is there a discount for paying early, or do you owe the full amount no matter what?
- Are there origination or processing fees pulled off the top before you get funded?
- Are you being pushed to stack a new advance on top of an old one? That is where owners get in trouble.
A good advisor tells you the total cost and the daily payment in plain dollars before you sign, and tells you honestly when funding is not the right move. If someone will not put the real number in front of you, walk away.
When does an MCA make sense?
An MCA is a great fit when the upside of moving fast beats the cost of the capital: covering payroll during a slow week, buying inventory ahead of your busy season, fixing a truck that is parked and not earning, or jumping on a bulk deal you cannot pass up. It is a poor fit when you just need the cheapest possible rate and can afford to wait weeks for a bank. That is exactly why we offer term loans and equipment cash-out too, so the tool matches the job.
